since it is m week we’ve been sorting by color. we’ve noticed that in the tens of milk lids there are, there is only one brown lid. come on, let’s drink some chocolate milk!

the next phase of this activity is arranging them into words, letter groups, abc order, etc. for some of our kids we explored spacing between letters. learning that when there is a “finger space” between letters that means they are different words. sometimes it was fun to do that on purpose. like a joke. hee hee hee.

we noticed how many letters can become other letters simply by turning them.

kevin can become keviz and can easily become kevin again! more funny stuff.

keep bringing those milk lids…we have more projects in mind!

r is for raise your (left) hand!

we played a version of simon says using left and right commands. oh, but how to remember which is our left? which is our right? especially when ms. kristin is standing in front of you and she is a mirror image? or when she turns around to stand like you so you turn around too? what do we do?

january 0809 - 20

we put on wristbands from the thrift shop. since it was l week, we put them on our left hand. very handy.

l is for left

the concept of left and right is one that we may not see the grasping of during preschool. it is a common phrase among preschool educators to refer to “your other left” or “your other right” because many young children simply haven’t mastered it!

january 0809 - 17

we did some finger painting one day in preparation for a martin luther king jr project and made handprints of each set of hands. we referred to their hands as left and right as we did it and wrote the words for them.

w is for wagon

thank you, new creation fellowship church!

january 0809 - 01

we received generous donations from church friends and were able to purchase two wagons. we installed some soft padding and rainbow fabric to make them especially cozy.

ms. vilia and i get our exercise and the preschoolers get the thrill of a ride. no worries, we are still finding ways to get everyone’s heart rate up and to learn the value of walking!

s is for show and tell

we do show and tell every day with guidelines given in our monthly newsletter. for instance, M week: bring something that starts with M. for G week: bring something that grows. for B week: bring a baby picture of yourself. well, for the first week after christmas break, there were no guidelines. simply bring what you like! we made sure to do show and tell early enough in the day so there would be time to use those things during work time. other than the times we sat so quietly listening to ms. vilia’s books, it was busy, busy, busy! like christmas morning all over again!

i don’t think there has ever been roller skating in the classroom before. why did we wait so long?

c is for crown

in honor of the new year, we read amanda dade’s new years parade and noticed all the amazing hats and crowns. we also noticed that it is a little girl who leads the parade and then gets to STOP the parade.  hmmmmmm.

afterwards, we used outdated calendars to make our own crowns.

again, more finger muscle work folding the strips. some were most successful doing a basic crumble or scrunch. the other end of the spectrum was accordian-style folding. most kids enjoyed rolling the strips and pressing down to make creases.

we were relishing the beautiful weather and actually brought our project outside to do! several kids called out a spontaneous, “happy new year!” when we put the crowns on.

happy new year indeed.
