b is for banana phone

what a silly thing. i was given about 30 laminated paper banana shapes.  it’s B week, so i thought we’d use them for something.

i thought we’d play a simple hide and seek with the banana papers.  but when i was trying to explain the game plan and wanted to get their attention, i pretended my banana was a phone.

now that was really silly.

then we made the plan for them to hide their eyes while i hid the stack of bananas (1 per child).

i came back and gave clues about where the bananas were hidden, then sent them off to find them!

coming back with only one banana was a little tricky….more fun to have the whole stack.

but we figured out the game…and there was a lot of giggling.

b is for busy

these children are so busy, so happy, so constructive.  with this being our first year back at our church building after 7 years away, i’ve wondered how the children will use the space.

i can set up equipment and arrange tables, but i’ve been eager to see which corners they gravitate to, which tables they move on their own.  i’m learning where i put things when we moved (like the circle time bell and certain CDs)…

it’s a gift to have space to move within.  it has been busy.

s is for sorting

this activity was not in my lesson plans.  i warned my new teacher friend, ms carol, to get used to this.

i pulled the red, yellow and green inch blocks for sorting (apple colors for a week).  then i remembered that since we were at church, there are several mini tongs and colored cups (thank you, mona and george!).

the concentration was incredible.

look at those faces!

look at the cooperation.

a new twist to the experience was assigning each child a color.  look at those busy hands.

and for the record, this was a little tricky!

a is for apple

no better place to start the year but here.

we’ve tasted apples, discussed why apples have stems, stretched out the aaaaaaaaaaa sound, discovered apple colors, used apple colored crayons, and simply discovered our new classroom through this theme.

i experienced the great joy of the montessori concept of PREPARING THE ENVIRONMENT…then watching them have at it.

l is for little

The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.

Jon Kabat-Zinn

Ms Carol and I spent our day in a Conscious Discipline training (thank you, Ms. Shana).

Now we’re even more ready to honor the little moments and little things with these little ones.

Friday begins the joy.
